Australian Institute of Conveyancers (NSW Division)
The Institute (AIC) is the professional association representing Licensed Conveyancers in NSW (CPCs). It’s role is to develop professional standards, handle complaints and assist the consumer requiring conveyancing services. The AIC works closely with various government departments in reviewing legislation and policy.

What Does The AIC Do
Since property or business purchases are usually high value transactions, it is always advisable to hire the services of trained and competent professionals who are aware of all the legal intricacies for property, business transfer. This will prevent any dispute at a later date. In Australia, the licensed conveyancers are professionally qualified to advise their clients on all the legal matters related to the purchase or sale of businesses or property in Australia. The Australian Institute of Conveyancers abbreviated as AIC, is the apex body in Australia representing all the licensed conveyancers in Australia who handle property and business transactions. There are divisions of the AIC in the different states of Australia like New South Wales, Southern Australia, Western Australia, Victoria.
If a property buyer or seller wishes to find a conveyancer in a particular state, he should contact the relevant division of the AIC in the state. The conveyancers are either owning their business, providing conveyancing services to their clients or are employed by other conveyancers or legal service providers, helping these businesses complete the conveyancing transactions of their client. Though the rules may differ in each state in Australia, the conveyancer is usually licensed by the state office for fair trade, after the conveyancer has completed the prescribed course, and also completed the requirements for practical training. The AIC will specify which educational organizations in each state are conducting the academic courses which have to be completed to get the conveyancing license . These courses may be part time or full time, online or correspondence courses. The conveyancer also has to complete two years practical training under a licensed professional before he can apply for his own conveyancing license.
The AIC and its various divisions across Australia provide information which the members may require to get their license and also renew their license. It also provides facilities so that members can get the training they require to get licensed and remain updated with any regulatory, legislative changes. It provides information on the changes in the legislation and procedure pertaining to sale and purchase of properties or businesses. They also provide the educational information which the members would require to remain updated in all the matters, which affect the completion of a conveyancing type transaction
To ensure that their members remain updated, AIC has a comprehensive program for professional development. This program includes a number of seminars, webinars, educational days for each region, and an annual conference. Both AIC members and non-AIC members can attend these seminars and other events. The AIC is regularly consulted by the various departments of the government, educational organizations, other trade and professional bodies who may require information from the AIC or assistance which will help them take better decisions.
The main goals of AIC can be summarized as :
Promoting the conveyancing profession and improving the services provided
representing the licensed conveyancers in Australia and their opinions on various issues which affect them professionally
increasing awareness so more people will study conveyancing, and take it up as a profession,
encouraging conveyancers to conduct themselves in a honourable and ethical manner, and incorporate the best business practices while dealing with their clients
Some of the activities of the AIC and its various divisions in the different states are as follows:
lobbying the federal, state and local government , related organizations to improve the legislation related to conveyancing, by adding new laws, or amending existing laws
organizing seminars and other educational programs, so that the conveyancers and other professionals remain updated with the latest developments in the field
increasing aware of the importance of conveyancing, so that more people use the services of the conveyancers for their property and business transactions, and young people consider conveyancing as a career option
developing tools, modules, and documents, which will help members become more competent, and also improve the standards for the profession.
The main governance body for each state divison of the AIC is the elected council. An annual general meeting is held every year, and members are elected to the council at this meeting. Each member is elected for a term of three years. The council has a president, vice president, secretary and treasurer, in addition to the elected councillors.
